The mission of Mount Airy Rails to Trails is to provide foot traffic for local businesses, scenic beauty for nature lovers, and a walk through the past for historians and rails fans.
A few years ago a small group of people decided to build a walking trail along the old abandoned Main line. After they looked at each other with "ummm what are we doing here" they got busy.....and the trail was underway.
MAC the caboose
A few short years ago a lonely caboose stood in an overgrown field. A visionary saw an opportunity to restore this treasure and with the help of many wonderful volunteers and local businesses MAC is about to become the Mount Airy Visitors Center.
Creating and maintaining a walking trail and restoring and maintaining a caboose is expense work. Please consider donating to our projects. We are a non profit 501-3(c), your donation is tax deductible. Just click on the "donate" tab at the top of the page.
Thank you to Wally's Iron Works for helping to restore the Mt Airy Junction signal tower.
In conjunction with the Historical Society of Mount Airy, we are in the process of restoring the B&O railroad signal that was once located at Mount Airy Junction. Left picture is the signal, right is picture of signal in the mid 1950s
